netflixed

We're only three episodes in but it's already one of the most sophisticated and elegantly made TV shows I've seen. Each episode is like a John Cheever short story directed by Wong Kar Wai. Lovely period design, gorgeous smoking, hateful mysogynist jokes--takes me back to my youth (yes, my youth was a decade and half later than the setting of this series, but I lived in the sticks and small-town USA, where the late '50s still reigned for many years).

Whenever I'm stuck in one of those never-ending lunches with advertising people, changing the topic to Mad Men enlivens previously prosaic discussions. Old timers remember when ad agencies were male-centric, hard-partying centers (no cell phones and blackberrys - you could be meeting clients for most afternoons, at a bar); and the younger ones can contrast their current 80 hour a week jobs with the "golden age".

I really should watch more episodes of Mad Men: I've seen maybe 5 or so, and liked them.

Now that the Wire is done, it's hands-down the best show on TV.

I love The Wire--but dag, yo, I need some escapism in my TV.

I think Season I and II of Deadwood are my all-time favorites. A shame they shit-canned it.

Ahhh, the late great Deadwood. Truly one of the better serial dramas ever. Stupid HBO, penny pinching David Milch out of a job.

Twin Peaks
Lost

Will dive into the Wire soon though. Alan Moore's a big fan!

I even loved Season 3 of deadwood... the only downside to it is that it ended softly and without closure... but jeeeez... that fight in the thoroughfare with Dan and Hearst's henchman?!?!?! one of the best things I've ever seen on tv.

I also love season 2, Bullock confronting the widdow's deadbeat/leech dad...

pow.
