I heard on NPR that there was a Senator in the sixties who had a serious stroke 2 years into his term. He never cast another vote, but as there is no legal requirement that such a Senator has to retire or be replaced, he served his term. So the Democrats should retain control, but obviously they may lack his vote. It will be a different picture if Johnson enters a coma....
Biden had surgery for a cerebral aneurism in '94 (I think) and was out of commission for 6 months. He missed a lot of votes!
