Blech

Why have I had a migrating sinus/chest/throat problem continuously since August?

My job.

Sorry you're under the weather. Maybe some Airborne? It works for me.

What did you think about the article in the NYT about getting rid of tenure? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/13/education/13tenure.html?pagewanted=1&th&emc=th

I'm torn on the tenure thing. It does protect really shitty teachers from firing/transfer (I know--I just got transferred and I'm and OK teacher--and other shit-heads who do nothing all day got to stay). But the teacher's union is right that these protections are important because what's to stop principals from firing good teachers just because their payscale is high and they want to save money and hire new schmucks? It's a Catch-44.

Yeah, but the article says they will give big bonuses and pay raises for all teachers, it's just that at the end of one year the principal gets to review the teacher and then they may get fired. It seems to me, there's got to be a way to compromise, there has got to be a way to get rid of teachers who aren't doing their jobs, while protecting others who do their jobs and have for years. Maybe the teachers union could agree to reasons for dismissal. The unions say that all the burden is placed on the teachers, and parents and students should share the burden. And I agree, but ---maybe I'm naive-- but I think that once you have a teacher who actually cares, the students and parents are more prone to caring too.
